A new recommendation for Hebden Bridge - Love Grows

One of our members recently visited Hebden Bridge and sent us this feedback.....

Hebden Bridge is a good place for a day out.  Attractively situated in the narrow Calder Valley beside a river and the canal, it is full of small shops selling good food, arts and crafts, with no sign of the usual High Street names.

For coeliacs, there is the added benefit of Lovegrows (tea rooms and produce shop).  It is up a few steps opposite the White Lion pub – though there are a couple of tables outdoors at street level.  Opening hours are 10.00 to 4.30, Wednesday to Sunday.  Note:  The café is CLOSED on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On the day the café opened, the owner was asked if he had anything gluten free on the menu.  He didn’t, and he made up his mind there and then that he wouldn’t let anyone down in future.  He did his research carefully, learning the importance of avoiding cross contamination, and came up with his present menu, most of which is available gluten free.  [Wouldn’t it be great if more proprietors responded like this?!!!]

Using a supply of GF bread (I think produced by the makers of “Yes you can”), Lovegrows offers coeliacs home-made soup, salads, croques monsieur/madame, platters of open sandwiches, with continental meats, local ham, cheeses, etc. served with various pickles and mustards.  The bread and preserves can be bought to take home.

To follow there is a glorious selection of cakes (half of the selection on display are GF) – all home-made and well covered.  I first tried the almond and blueberry cake (my favourite) and, later, the iced carrot cake.  Mike then let me try a sample of his fruit cake - which is GF, dairy free, fat free and suitable for vegans.  While I was there, other cakes were added to the display – a citrus cake (orange, lemon and lime) and a clementine and almond cake.  Mike said that by the following day there would be a choice of 7 GF cakes.

The café has a pleasant atmosphere, is spotlessly clean and the service is excellent.  Highly recommended!

Gluten free food on the go

We recently found that the following coffee shops have started to offer some gluten free products, we wanted to share in case this was useful while you were out and about.

Starbucks – Rolling out gf food nationwide, the information below was taken directly from Starbucks...

The gluten free Veggie Good Houmous wrap is now being rolled out to Starbucks shops nationwide, following a successful launch into selected shops earlier this year.

You might spot the Newburn Bakehouse branding on the back of the pack; and that's because the delicious Veggie Good Houmous filling is packed into our gluten free and wheat-free seeded wrap. Our soft and flavoursome wrap is a good source of fibre and is low in saturated fats, the Veggie Good Houmous is packed with chargrilled mixed vegetables, fresh shredded carrot and spinach leaves - so it counts as one of your five-a-day too. The delicious lemon and coriander houmous and Moroccan spiced carrot and orange chutney make it a real tasty treat.

Taste and convenience

We are delighted to see a tasty lunch item rolling out to 750 shops across the country – making it even easier to follow a gluten free diet, wherever you are.

The wrap is available to take away at £3.29, or £3.99 to eat-in if you want to sit and watch the world go by, perhaps accompanied by your favourite coffee or one of the famous Starbucks Frappuccinos.

Costa Coffee

Costa Coffee has launched a gluten free savoury item which has been approved by Coeliac UK.

The Costa gluten free and dairy free Chicken and Basil Salad Wrap is a fresh, chilled wrap perfect for lunchtime. It's packed with delicious British roast chicken breast, flavoursome tomatoes and wild rocket with a basil mayonnaise dressing – all wrapped up in a Newburn Bakehouse Gluten Free Seeded Wrap.Costa is all about fresh food, packed full of flavour, made with British led ingredients; Our wraps are made by expert bakers in our dedicated gluten free bakery in Newburn, baked with linseed, sunflower and millet seed for a rich flavour and slightly crunchy texture.

Costa shops across the UK will be stocking the Chicken and Basil Salad Wrap, so make sure you pick one up for lunch next time you pop in for a coffee. With shops located all over the UK, it means following a gluten free diet is becoming even more convenient, whether you're out shopping for the day, or going out to lunch with colleagues or friends.

The Chicken and Basil Salad Wrap is £3.75, perfect paired with a leisurely latte or classic cappuccino.

Update from Glutafin - regarding 'withdrawn' products

Glutafin asked the Leeds Group to disseminate the following information as it's affecting a lot of members.

We have recently changed some of the names of our products. Some customers are experiencing difficulties when placing their repeat prescription with the doctor.  At some doctors surgeries, Glutafin products are appearing as "withdrawn".

Please rest assured, Glutafin have NOT withdrawn any products, this is a system error.

We recommend informing your surgery that the products have not been withdrawn, they are simply appearing under a new name.

The full list of Glutafin products that have been affected can be viewed on our website www.glutafin.co.uk  Please do not hesitate to contact us by email or phone on 0800 988 2470.

We hope this helps.

The latest news from Warburtons Bakehouse

Please find below information we recieved from Warburtons....

At Newburn Bakehouse, we really value your feedback and try our best to help with the challenges you face living gluten free. In response to popular demand we are pleased to announce that we’ve managed to pack an extra wrap into our Seeded Wraps Pack stocked in Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Ocado. Now with 4 wraps per pack instead of 3, the new pack provides better value for the same price, plus the same great quality. The wraps are also now dairy free as well as gluten free and wheat free, so even those with lactose intolerance can try them.

As well as solving many a lunchtime dilemma, don’t forget you can also use our gluten free wraps to make other delicious recipes too, such as fajitas, enchiladas, or pizzas for a quick dinner in 10 minutes. They’re so versatile that they can even be used to make gluten free desserts at home such as Spiced Apple Strudel. Find out how to make the most out of your 4 seeded wraps by checking out our collection of delicious gluten free recipes.

Please do tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages - we’re sure you’ll love them as much as we do. You can also find more details about these gluten, wheat and dairy free wraps on our product page.

See below for some key questions we know you may have about the new wraps;

1. Are the 3 Wraps Pack  also dairy free? If so, why don’t they say dairy free on the packaging?

All of our wraps packs are now dairy free and this will be communicated on pack when we next print new packaging - so watch out for it soon.

2. Why have you changed to 4 in a pack?

After listening to customer feedback we’ve been looking at ways that we could make our wraps even better value for our customers. We’re pleased to announce that we have been able to develop a 4 pack with the same great quality and the same RRP (£2.99) as our 3 Pack.

We’re also delighted to announce that our wraps are now dairy free and are suitable for those with lactose intolerance, milk allergies or those simply wishing to avoid dairy.

3. Is it the same recipe?

It is the same recipe, however following feedback from customers we have made the wraps dairy free and slightly thinner so that they are easier to use when rolling and folding. They’re also  great for using as pizza bases and our team went through plenty of arduous testing to make sure all our recipes still work, whether you’re fond of a fajita, partial to a pizza or simply want to cram with your favourite filling.

4. Where is the new 4 pack available?

Our new Seeded 4 pack is available in Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. The White 3 Pack and Seeded 3 pack are currently available in Tesco, however these will switch over to the new 4 Packs as soon as possible. We’ll keep you updated on timings.

5. Are the seeds in the wraps different?

No, we still use the same mix of seeds, namely sunflower, millet and linseed as we find these give the wraps a lovely, nutty taste and texture.

6. Why aren’t the white wraps 4 to a pack?

We are currently working on moving the white wraps to a 4 pack in the near future.

It's Coeliac Awareness Week

Approximately 1 in 100 of the general population have it, many go undiagnosed for years. If your parent child or even grandparent has it your chances of developing it increase tenfold.

One problem is recognising the symptoms as they vary greatly between individuals. From severe gut symptoms such as constipation and bloating to tiredness and skin problems. Some people don't have any symptoms! See here for more details https://www.coeliac.org.uk/coeliac-disease/about-coeliac-disease-and-dermatitis-herpetiformis/symptoms/

We are lucky that the way to treat it is not with drugs but by following a strict gluten free diet. If undiagnosed or failing to stick to the diet can case serious longer term problems such as osteoporosis, increased risk of bowel cancer, fertility problems and alopecia.

Does this sound like you or someone you know?
